High altitudes and extreme weather conditions limit the number of days available for road crews to preform maintenance on the Beartooth Highway. Several road improvement projects are upcoming in the next several years. In an effort to keep travelers updated on current construction projects the Federal Highway Administration and Yellowstone National Park Service maintain web sites. Check these two web sites regularily before and during visits to the Beartooth Highway.
2011 Construction Information
Constuction continues from the Beartooth Lake Outlet Bridge to the Top of the World Store. Work includes roadway excavation, culvert installation, survey, and bridge construction. Travelers area advised that delays up to 30 minutes can be expected. There is a short section of dirt and gravel base road and motorcycles are advised to use extreme caution.
Beginning July 25, 2011 nightly closures of the Beartooth Highway will begin between Beartooth Lake Outlet Bridge and Top of the World Store.
Nightly closure schedule:
Monday - Thursday - 8:00 pm to 8:00 am
Friday - 10:00 pm to 8:00 am Saturday
Saturday - No Closures
Sunday - 10:00 pm to 8:00 am Monday
The remainder of the Beartooth Highway is in great shape.
Heavy Equipment on the Highway
Visitors to the Cooke City area may encounter heavy equipment on the Beartooth Highway as the Montana Department of Environmental Quality t a five-year, $24 million reclamation project for the McLaren Mine Mill just east of Yellowstone National Park. More information about the reclamation project can be found on-line at the Montana DEQ web site.
